Northern
Virginia Mental Health Institute is seeking someone to provide recreation
therapy and psychosocial education rehab activities that are responsive to the
social, physical and emotional & cognitive recreational needs of our
patient population. Responsibilities include providing a well-coordinated
program of recreational therapy activities which will enable patients to
function independently in the community.
Knowledge of the principles, techniques and methods of recreation
therapy and of basic statistics required. Knowledge of the kinds of usage of
recreation therapy materials and equipment required. Ability
to stimulate and sustain interests of patient’s recreation therapy activities
as well as the ability to evaluate & report patient progress. Ability to work with and guide other employees, students and
volunteers. Ability to safely operate a state owned motor vehicle to
transport patients for community outings.
Graduation
from an accredited college or university with major studies in Recreation
Therapy, Recreational Management, or related field required. Valid driver’s
license required. Experience in
psychiatric hospital as a paid Recreation Therapist or Internship placement
preferred. Certification as a Certified
Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council of Therapeutic
Recreation Certification (NCTRC) strongly preferred.
The
hours are mainly day shift but some evening and weekend hours required.
The
position opened on 11/5/09 with a minimum five-day posting. A fingerprint-based
criminal history check and pre-employment drug screening will be required of
the selected candidate.
