Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute is seeking someone to establish and continue a time limited peer relationship with individuals who currently reside in the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute and individuals who have recently returned to the community.This position will also provide supervision to an hourly Peer Specialist. Through a peer support relationship and mentorship, the Peer Specialist assists individuals in their transition back to the community.The Peer Specialist helps to foster hope and serves as a role model for persons who are in recovery.The Peer Specialist will work alongside individuals during and after a hospitalization to encourage wellness and independence.Must have the ability to interact positively with clients of various cultural backgrounds, cognitive capacities and psychiatric/physical disabilities.Clear oral and written communication to both clients and staff.Ability to use graphics and present materials for persons with severe challenges whose abilities to read and comprehend are diminished.Ability to manage self professionally at all times.Skill in engaging individuals in pre-employment/job support services or computer skills training.Strong understanding of wellness and recovery principles, WRAP principles and sensory interventions.Working knowledge of up to date community resources such as transportation systems, recreation centers and activities, churches, drop in centers, support groups, etc.Timely communication of work-related needs and concerns to NVMHNI supervisor.Ability to acknowledge and request the need for additional support and assistance from NVMHI staff. Consistent adherence to established safety standards.



        Valid Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) certification required.

        Prior experience as a Peer Support Specialist, experience running peer led groups and Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) groups required.

        Experience with the chronic mentally ill population required.

        Valid driverís license required.

        Previous supervisory experience preferred.


Starting at salary range begins at $30,000; however, final salary is negotiable based on experience and current salary. This position requires that the selected candidate be able to work a flexible schedule. This is a restricted position whose funding is reviewed for renewal every October.
