Chaplaincy Program

The Chaplaincy services and programs offered at NVMHI have been developed to meet the spiritual needs and interests of patients from different religious traditions and those spiritual seekers who may not identify with a particular tradition. Religious tolerance is encouraged through having all programs and worship services open to any interested patient with emphasis on respect and care for our neighbors and the stranger in our midst.

Worship services are offered for specific traditions, such as the weekly Christian non-denominational services or the monthly Jewish or Muslim services. Some worship services are offered as Interfaith services. Community volunteers have been active in helping to expand our services, such as the new Jewish Shabbat services and Holy Communion for Roman Catholics and Protestants. Each month our programming will vary depending on the fluctuating interests of the NVMHI population. There also may be special service needs, such as for Memorial Services or to recognize National Prayer Days.

The Chaplaincy program is a part of the Treatment Mall programming too. There has been a weekly Spiritual Journey Group and Spiritual Music Group offered. Occasionally there have been open Labyrinth walks on the canvas labyrinth made by patients and the Art Therapy staff in 2005.

Chaplaincy services also include pastoral care and counseling for patients and contacts with family or community ministers and religious leaders as requested.
